Moments in history: Law and Peters blaze the transfer trail

In the days before transfer windows, March would be a busy month in the football marketplace. This week marks the anniversary of two milestones.

On March 15, 1960, Denis Law became the first player to move between British clubs for a transfer fee in excess of £50,000 when he joined Manchester City for £55,000 from Huddersfield. In June the following year, Law became Britain's first £100,000 player when he moved to Torino in Italy.

Italy was the game's economic powerhouse at that time and Juventus had already taken the world record transfer fee to £500,000 -- paid for Varese's Pietro Anastasi in 1968 -- before the British record reached £200,000.

That valuation was placed on 1966 World Cup hero Martin Peters when he left West Ham for Tottenham on March 21, 1970, in a deal that saw Jimmy Greaves move the other way.
